I wanted to pay a special tribute to our soldiers
and their families this holiday season by
bringing to your attention to the need of tireless
ongoing support from volunteers and
entertainers who are willing to travel the world
for the sake of our troops. Regardless of who it
is, boosting the morale of our troops stationed
far away from the comforts of home in constant
danger has to be a priority. Our concentrated
effort can only have a positive impact effective
leading to our nation's success..
In my research of the early beginnings of troop
support through the U.S.O. (United Service
Organization), I discovered that The Grand Ole
Opry and Gene Autry's Radio show "Melody
Ranch" became early partners with the U.S.O.
in the 1940's. Both shows toured around the
world introducing country music to many soldiers.
There were other participants like Big Band
performances and Hollywood super stars, but to
my delight I discovered that through the
decades country music artists consistently
topped the list of USO performers.
There have been more country music celebrities
ready and eager to boost troop morale than any
other music genre. Incredibly the long list of
early country music artists performing from the
1940's up to 1970 includes Gene Autry, Red
Foley, Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, Hank
Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Loretta
Lynn, Jerry Reed, Roy Rogers and Dale
Evans. From 1970 to 1996 Country artists
include Loretta Lynn, Mickey Gilley, Kris
Kristofferson, Lee Greenwood,
Clint Black and Lisa Hartman, Barbara
Fairchild, Randy Travis, The Judds, Patty
Lovelace, Conway Twitty, Charlie Daniels,
The Forester Sisters, Holly Dunn, Larry
Gatlin, Rick Orozco, and The Nashville
Bluegrass Band.
To the present in 2007, you are familiar with
artists such as Reba McEntire, Mary Chapin
Carpenter, Claudia Church, The Bellamy
Brothers, Toby Keith, Neal McCoy, Tracy
Byrd, Charlie Daniels, Darryl Worley, Wayne
Newton, Jamie O'Neal, Craig Morgan, Mark
Wills, Diamond Rio, Rachel Proctor, Brad
Cotter, Rascal Flatts, Ty England, and Keni
Thomas. All were selflessly motivated to get
involved. Considering this is the U.S.O.'s
66th Anniversary, and the year is not over yet,
there are a few more names that will be added
to the 2007 list. I sincerely apologize if I have
overlooked anyone.
The country music artists named were not only
motivated from the heart, but have
demonstrated their genuine gratitude and
compassion for the soldier who is making the
ultimate sacrifice protecting our freedom for the
sake of their families, God and Country.
Thank God for the motivated soldier, the
volunteer, and thank God for prayer that
ultimately takes our plans and needful desires to
the powerhouse of the Throne of Grace.

What Do You Know
About The U.S.O.?
Monday, November 19, 2007
Did you know that the U.S.O was conceived
behind the walls of our United States
government. President Franklin Roosevelt in
1941 thought it best to make the U.S.O a
private program to serve the rapidly growing
armed forces. He knew that its success
depended upon public support organized by
the American people for the American soldier.
He called to action six civilian led agencies:
The Salvation Army, Young Men's Christian
Association, Young Women's Christian
Association, National Catholic Community
Services, National Travelers Aid Association,
and the National Jewish Welfare Board.
The U.S.O (United Services Organization) has
served our men and women in uniform officially
since October 30,1941. In times of war and
peace, this non-profit organization relies on
volunteer service and donations of individuals
and corporations to provide programs,
recreational, and morale services for the
soldiers and families of our Armed Forces.
November 28th marks the 67th Anniversary of
the first U.S.O. Club which opened in
Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1941. From its
inception up to this year 2007 celebrities have
volunteered their time and talents often flying
into war zones to bring a little bit of home to
our soldiers. The list of celebrities giving up
their own family Christmas holiday to be with
our soldiers is significantly long.
Along with the impact of country music the
names of famous Hollywood super stars
include: Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Hope, The
Andrew Sisters, Phyllis Diller, Lucille Ball,
and John Wayne. To the present 2007 other
celebrities include The Dallas Cowboy
Cheerleaders, Brooke Shields, Chuck
Norris, Sugar Ray Leonard, Morgan
Freeman, Ben Affleck, and yes, David
Letterman.
If you would like to be a part of this historically
successful organization and volunteer your
time and talents, send a package to a soldier,
or make a monetary donation,go to:
www.uso.org/donate for more information.
